United Fencing is more than just a fence and farm store. They also have equine supplies and supplies for other animals, like birds, dogs and cats.

Residents of Apple Creek and surrounding towns have come to rely on United Fencing for agricultural and other types of fencing products since the store opened in 2018. Now, said founder Nelson Yoder, United Fencing also has become the area’s go-to destination for dog supplies and other pet needs.

“We didn’t carry dog supplies when we first opened, but the dog industry has been growing dramatically in recent years and we wanted to be able to provide all of the necessities to our customers,” Yoder said. “Dog supplies are our fastest growing product line.”

The community will have a chance to get a good look at all of the store’s fencing, pet products, equestrian, lawn and garden, and other products while enjoying free food and sale prices at United Fencing’s fourth annual spring sale, to be held on Friday and Saturday, April 9 and 10, said marketing manager Brenda Hershberger.

“There will be discounted items on sale and we’ll have prizes and giveaways during the event,” Hershberger said. “Most of all, we want people to come in, enjoy fellowship and have fun.”

Guests on Friday can enjoy cream sticks, doughnuts and coffee.

On Saturday, RC Farms of Apple Creek will bring in its food truck to feed hot lunches to hungry patrons.

“People always look forward to the free food,” Hershberger said. “We always have a very nice turnout for this event.”

The annual spring sale gives old and new customers a chance to peruse the store’s ample product selection.

“This is the season when people start to buy most of their fence supplies,” Hershberger said. “We also sell a lot of animal feed and shavings during the winter. We sell fencing to customers who do the installation and the repairs on their own, but we also have professional fence crews who can do the job for them.”

Yoder’s work in the fencing business preceded the establishment of the retail store. After working for a fence company for three years during the 1990s, he switched into the carpentry field.

“But I just couldn’t stay away from fencing,” Yoder said. “In 2005 I started to install fences as a side job in the evenings and on weekends. By 2009 I had so much work that I made the decision to stop doing carpentry and concentrate on fencing. That’s what I’ve done ever since.”

In 2016 Yoder bought a parcel of land on Route 250 and opened a retail store two years later. This fast growing company now has 6 employees working in the store, 2 yard guys, 2 delivery drivers, and 16 employee’s on the fence crews.

“We saw a need in this area for a fencing store,” Yoder said. “With the location, we saw the need to expand the product line beyond fencing, to where we now offer a broad range of, Pet Supplies, Equine Supplies, Lawn & Garden Supplies and so much more!”

Today, Hershberger said, United Fencing offers a wide range of fencing products including all the fencing hardware, gates and tools you need to build your own fence. For those who don’t want to do it themselves, United Fencing can handle the job, with two post-pounding crews, two wire fence crews and a repair crew, she said.

“But we’re more than just a fence and farm store,” Hershberger said. “We also have equine supplie, pet supplies and supplies for other animals, like birds, dogs and cats.”
