The Northwestern Ruritan Club met Monday, May 19 for the monthly dinner/meeting at Northwestern High School. President Jamie Bowman called the meeting to order, welcoming members and guest Justin Becker. The group joined in singing “America,” and the invocation was given by Jim Johnson. The dinner was served by NWHS chefs.

Treasurer Chuck Beck’s report was approved subject to audit. Thank-you notes were received for the donation to Wayne County Rails to Trails and the Ladies Guild of Meals & More in St. Stephen’s Church in West Salem. A motion was passed for the club to donate to the West Salem Messenger for the services it provides to the club.

Beck said the Husky Brigade packages will go out soon. He knows of four soldiers from the community: Zack Hottel, Jade Marcum, Montana Spiegelmeier and Dakota Spiegelmeier. He said he appreciated the goodies members brought in for the packages during the meeting.

Bowman said the Parade of Flags was to be put out for the Memorial Day weekend and left out until after the Fourth of July.

Beck said the Roadside Trash Pickup on Route 301 between Pleasant Home and Lattasburg will be June 10, the day after the club’s June meeting.

Dick Wiley said the West Salem Bicycle Race will be Saturday, July 12. He would appreciate help with traffic control.

With no more business, the meeting was adjourned to the auditorium for the introduction of the club’s scholarship recipients. Chair/NWHS Principal Tyler Keener told of the background of the club and what the club does for the community.

This year scholarships will be given to 10 students for a total of $7,050. Students are Isaac Beun, Kayla Cutter, Mallory Gilbert, Will Hamey, Ella Hartsel, Danyel Hyatt, Kelli Kearney, Sydney McConahay, McKensie McCoy and Gabriel Nicholson. Each student introduced their family, who was with them that evening, and told of their future plans including the college they will attend next year.

This will make a total of $189,230 given to 473 students during the last 40 years, beginning in 1986.

The meeting was adjourned with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a cookies and punch reception, which was furnished by the high school cooks.

The next dinner/meeting will be June 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Northwestern High School. The director’s meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the school library.
