Fall lovely, but winter's coming

Seems to me fall arrived early this year, or perhaps I just wanted summer to stay with us a bit longer.

Our house is mourning the loss of summer, as am I. Don’t get us wrong: Fall is a lovely time of year, but it is the door to winter. The cold, the ice, the snow that follows fall, it's not our favorite season. Though the leaves on the trees are gorgeous when they display their brilliant colors, they soon fall to the ground and leave their poor trees stark and bare to face the coming cold.

It won’t be long before Jack Frost arrives and puts an end to our gorgeous gardens. Our house loves her flowers and gets so sad when they fade away. That doesn’t thrill me either. But there is always a bright side to seasonal change, and in fall comes Halloween, followed by Thanksgiving in November. Then winter arrives and ushers in Christmas. Houses like all those holidays because they get dressed up with beautiful decorations and get to entertain visitors. It is fun to get our places all decorated for the holidays. Being admired is a dream come true for our houses.

When the holidays are over and all the decorations are stored away, we occupants get a chance to rest. However, houses don’t rest; they begin to plan for the coming year. They think about new windows, gutters, paint, carpet and new décor. They spend time thinking about lawns, plants, fencing and perhaps new shutters. Houses are always thinking about ways to improve their appearance. It’s what they do.

We occupants like to spend winters enjoying cold-weather sports like skiing, sledding, skating and staying warm. It is a time for cuddling in front of our fireplaces and sipping hot drinks. Occupants beware: While we are enjoying, our houses are making lists. They are taking stock of projects they desire. They may want a new roof, perhaps a rear deck and maybe some interior paint. Houses never consider the costs of things done to them; they trust their occupants to provide for their wants.

So occupants, be frugal with your money. Chances are come spring you are going to need lots of it.
