Our home not thrilled with her occupants

Our houses were thrilled when we got the order to stay at home. They were happily anticipating our constant attention to their every want and need. Poor houses, that’s not what they are getting. What they now have are stir-crazy occupants wandering through her rooms bored and anxious.

Being at home all the time should be exciting. We have time to do all those projects we’ve talked about for months. Unfortunately those projects aren’t getting done because we occupants are having trouble adjusting to not being out and about.

For instance our lawn would like to be mowed. We have the time to get that done, but the ground is too wet, and our mower hates wet grass. Our windows could be washed, but that involves ladders and more effort than we can summon. We have rearranged a few cabinets, but that effort is hidden behind the cabinet doors.

We humans just don’t know how to take advantage of all this free time. I can’t remember a time since childhood that we’ve had this many unfilled hours in a day. We should be putting all this time to productive use, but instead we watch television, read books, have long phone conversations with friends and family, and even take the occasional nap.

Our house breathes a sigh of relief when we take the dogs out for a walk or a ride in the car. She can then enjoy some peace and quiet when her humans and dogs are exercising. Speaking of the dogs, they are delighted we are here all the time. We have no idea what they do when we are not around, but they are always thrilled when we return home.

Eventually these odd times will pass and we can be out and about. We will have to avoid strangers and ailing friends for a while, but we will be free to get the spring cleaning done, the lawn mowed, the windows washed and the walk swept. And we will be so disappointed with ourselves that we didn’t take advantage of all those weeks of home time. Our house will not be happy with us either, and that can be scary.
