Tom Rife: Livin' the Team

Tom Rife’s storied journalism career actually started in elementary school in rural Greenfield, Ohio, where he began “Livin’ the Team” as sports editor of the mimeographed Sixth Grade Gazette. With ink in his blood, he went on to hold that same position for McClain High School’s student newspaper, also writing sports for the Greenfield Daily Times. Ohio University was next up, where he earned a communications degree and admitted to playing a fairly sketchy trombone in the Marching 110. A week after graduating from OU, Tom became sports editor of the Naples Daily News in Naples, Florida, a role he held for 31 years. His byline continued in that publication another 15 years, as he continued to author columns and features while teaching high school students English, journalism and television production – primarily at Naples High – before moving to Wooster with wife, Wendy, in 2016. Honing his craft for large media outlets such as Scripps, Gannett and GateHouse, Tom’s enthusiasm for reporting remains just as vibrant today. When not pounding the keys, he enjoys photography, classic cars, music, county fairs and even crafting. And he’ll watch anything on wheels race for a checkered flag!
