Holidays over, hunkering down

Holidays over, hunkering down

From Thanksgiving to Christmas is the busiest time of the year.

Not only is it busy, but also it races past. And we are no different.

Our house loves this season, and she requires tons of attention. She must be decorated, both inside and out.

But first, of course, a good house cleaning is required. Once everything is sparkling, the decorations are added and a tree is dragged in. Dragging in a tree negates all the vacuuming so carefully done, which must then be done again. Then unwrapping ornaments scatters packing paper all over the place, which has to be disposed of. Once everything is done, we are exhausted and ready to put our feet up.

Our house is so happy. She is seasonally decorated and in her glory. She will preen amongst her neighboring houses until the New Year. Visitors are welcome as long as they give her the admiration she craves. We are in the holiday spirit, and our house is beautiful.

Presents are bought, wrapped and carefully placed under the tree. Cookies are baked and offered to all whom come to see us and our lovely house. Then, in a wild flurry of activity, the New Year approaches and that decorating work must be undone. Fortunately New Year’s Day is a holiday that we get to spend stripping our abode of her seasonal finery and packing away all that stuff until next year. Our poor shed actually cringes when we begin to stack her full of bins full of decorations.

Now with all the festivities behind us, we must hunker down for the brutality of winter. Houses do not like winter, and many suffer frozen-pipe disease during this time. Frozen pipes hurt the occupants as well as the houses. Having survived such a plague of frozen pipes one winter, we dutifully check all the pipes before the heavy cold sets in. Our house is very grateful.

As long as a house stays warm inside, her occupants can endure winter in comfort. We snuggle in with our dogs and await the arrival of spring. And with any luck that lovely time will arrive early this year. Happy holidays, hope yours were great.
