Garaway Athletic Director Chip Amicone gave an athletic presentation concerning hiring of coaches and stipends they receive during the Monday, March 18 board meeting. Amicone said over the past years several coaches have approached him to look at adding an additional coach to their program or to ask for a way to add a little more money to the stipends to allow a proper number of coaches for their sport.

“We hire a varsity coach and assistant for each sport. The sports impacted by the proposal is boys and girls track, baseball, volleyball, and boys basketball. Sports that are included but not affected at this time are girls basketball and softball,” he said. “Properly staffed athletic programs with consistent coaches is key to success.”

The proposal includes adding a varsity assistant stipend to track and changing pay structure for boys basketball, softball, volleyball and track. Currently, there is a head coach, junior varsity and freshman if a team exists. Amicone is proposing a head coach, varsity assistant, junior varsity and freshman if a team exists, in that sport.

Amicone provided coaching stipend proposals and school comparisons for stipends from eight school district. He also provided the board with other statistics about sports in the district. The board took the proposal under advisement.
