The Garaway Board of Education passed a resolution to participate in the Stark County Cooperative bid for an integrated 71-passenger conventional school bus at the Feb. 10 meeting. The board approved the purchase of a 2026 International bus from Hill International Trucks of East Liverpool at a cost of $133,517. Bus #16 will be a trade-in. Funds will be taken from the Permanent Improvement Bus/Tech Fund.

In another matter the board approved a right of first refusal contract between the board of education and Myron R. Miller for the property located at 342 Fairview Ave. NW, Sugarcreek. According to District Treasurer Sheryl Hardesty, the property can only be sold to the school district, which is located near the district’s parking lot. She said students are parking at the Belden Centre and walking across U.S. 39 to the school.

The board also approved the purchase of 250 Chromebooks from East Central Ohio Educational Service Center for fiscal year 2026 at a cost of $64,947.

The board also did the following:

—Accepted $125 in donations (each) for unpaid student Chromebook fees for Miller Avenue Elementary and Ragersville Elementary from the Yakley family on behalf of the Swiss Village Bulk Food store.

—Approved the Ohio Tech Cred grant for $26,000.

—Approved electrical upgrades at Dundee Elementary by Otto Electric at a cost of $29,500.

—Gave approval to enter into a contract with Mowing Solutions LLC for mowing the athletic fields at a cost of $341 per mow.

—Approved Western Governor’s University student teacher placement of Marie Kaser to student teach with John Meek through May 15, 2025.

—Approved Tekton Engineering LLC retainer for engineering services until Dec. 31, 2025, at a cost of $5,000.

—Entered into a contract with Belden Brick Co. for rental of the athletic fields at a cost of $350.

—Entered into a contract with Pro A/V of Ohio for lighting and sound upgrades for the middle school stage to be paid from Title IV and part of a grant at a cost of $26,875.

—Gave approval to 10 projects for teachers to be paid by the Garaway Education Foundation Teacher’s Grant.

—Approved the disposal of outdated textbooks and a Hobart mixer at Baltic Elementary.

—Approved the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. May 13-15, 2026.

—Will enter into a contract with Cardinal Group for removing of the Miller Elementary Avenue gym floor adhering to all Ohio Environmental Protection Agency regulations regarding asbestos removal at a cost of $17,500.

—Approved a contract with County Floors Warehouse for Miller Avenue stage, hallway and storage room flooring at a cost of $4,330 and for gym flooring and line painting at a cost of $23,780.

—Issued one-year supplemental contract to Matthew Oliver and Joel Honigford, spring strength coaches, shared stipend.

—Granted one-year supplemental coaching contracts to Dennis Koshmider and Maria Koshmider, head softball, and rescinded the contract for Dennis Koshmider as head softball (it will be shared); Joyce Grimm, JV softball; Jason Wallick and Mason Elliott, assistant varsity track; Kyle Dunn and Susan Schlabach, middle school track; Nicholas Schwartz and Trevor Donaldson, assistant varsity baseball; Darren Yosick, JV baseball; and Cody Jerles, freshman baseball.

Other information

The board recognized January Student of the Month recipients Aedan Miller, high school; Alexa Jones, middle school; Dakota Hershberger, artist; Dillon Soehnlen, employee; Ava Starner and Blaine Lintern, December athletes; and Blaine Raber and Paige Regula, January athletes.

The next meeting will be March 17 at 6 p.m. in the high school library at 146 Dover Road NW in Sugarcreek.
