A fresh layer of shredded bark mulch can help to make any residential or commercial landscape look fantastic. The problem is, by the end of a hot summer, the gorgeous natural color of the mulch tends to give way to a drab, faded plant bed.

Kaufman Mulch, manager Nelson Burkholder said, he has the solution.

“Our dyed mulch keeps its color throughout the season and longer,” Burkholder said. “We have it available in black, red and now, a new brown color.”
Bark mulch, made from local sawmill trimming, not only can beautify a plant bed but it also can control weeds.

“We don’t use residential yard waste in our wood mulch products,” Burkholder said. “We use sawmill waste to reduce the chances of getting weed seeds in the batch.”

Kaufman Mulch, founded in 1997, offers a wide selection of mulch, compost, topsoil and other garden and landscaping products.

“Our products are top notch, and we are experts in helping customers determine what to use them for,” Burkholder said.

For example, he said, some people confuse compost with wood mulch.

“Mulch is shredded up bark that is bulky enough not to disappear into your soil,” Burkholder said. “It’s wonderful for weed control. But if you’re looking to boost the organic content of your garden soil to produce better plants, you’ll want to mix in some compost.”

Compost is a humus-like product that results from the natural biological decomposition of organic material, such as leaves, yard waste or manure. Unlike mulch, which is spread over the top of the soil in a plant bed, compost is blended into the soil, allowing the soil to better retain water and hold nutrients. Kaufman Mulch carries several types of compost. Maybe the most popular for landscape applications, Burkholder said, is the company’s own blend of bark mulch and leaf compost.

Kaufman’s leaf compost is made from 100 percent composted leaves. The company also offers Bull Country Compost – a composted cow manure product.

“Bull Country Compost is a very fertile compost that is designed for gardens,” Burkholder said. ”We also offer Bull Country Compost blended with bark mulch and leaf mulch for better application.”
Kaufman also offers mulch, compost and soil products in bulk or bags.

“Springtime is the ideal time to get your mulch spread,” Burkholder said. “If you get it on your bed before the weeds get a chance to take over, it will do a much better job.”
