New trip added to the 2024 senior center schedule
If you can drive or get a ride to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, you can travel on the three trips the center has planned for 2024. All trips depart from their Dover location.
“You go anywhere as long as you can get to the senior center,” said Vicki Yates of the TCSC who helps as an escort on trips. “It’s really nice because you have escorts, and you have local people. Our travelers are repeat travelers, they know each other, and they make friends. They just feel a sense of security and safety.”
Traveling to the senior center is much easier than arranging departure elsewhere.
“You don’t have to worry about somebody taking them to the airport, dropping them off and then coming back to pick them up. If they want to, they can leave their car here,” said Peggy Robb, who plans the trips for the senior center.
Travel on the senior center trips is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. You do not have to be a member of the center.
A New York City Christmas
For 2024, a new trip has been added since the trip unveiling took place earlier this year. A New York City Christmas will travel to the city Dec. 9-12, 2024, and visit a number of holiday attractions.
“We already had an interest of over 25 passengers so far, so we got it put together for December 2024,” said Yates.
The trip will feature many holiday favorites.
“We are going to Radio City Music Hall for a show featuring the Rockettes and we’re going to have orchestra seating,” Yates said. “And then we’ll have a two-day guided tour around the city to Rockefeller Center and the Christmas tree and ice-skating rink down there, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Fifth Avenue store windows including Macy’s.”
Due to the unpredictable traffic in the city, if time allows the tour will also visit Central Station, Times Square, Brooklyn, Harlem and Uptown Manhattan.
“We’ll be on the bus, they won’t be walking all that,” Yates said. “The last day, we’re going to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.”
As with other senior center trips there will also be plenty of time for shopping. The trip includes three nights hotel accommodations, three breakfasts at your hotel, two dinners, the Radio City Music Hall Christmas spectacular, two-day guided tour of New York City, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, and a visit to the Chelsea Market at the Grand Central Holiday Fair.
The cost of the New York City Christmas trip is $1,049 per person for double occupancy and $1,319 per person for single occupancy. A deposit of $150 is due when you book, and final payment is due by Oct. 11, 2024.
The Sights and Sounds of Lancaster
From June 18-21, 2024, another four-day, three-night trip is planned and will feature the Sights and Sounds of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The package includes three nights lodging at the Heritage Hotel, three breakfasts, three dinners including the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre featuring “The Full Monty,” and dinner with a magic show at the Magic and Wonder Theatre, a performance of “Daniel” at the Sight and Sound Theatre, Kitchen Kettle Village, a guided tour of Gettysburg battlefields, and Tanger Outlet shopping.
The cost of the trip is $849 per person for double occupancy and $1,048 per person for single occupancy. A deposit of $150 is due at booking, the final payment is due by April 1, 2024.
Albuquerque and Santa Fe
The senior center is traveling to another popular site that they have featured before – Albuquerque and Santa Fe on Sept. 14-24, 2024.
Highlights of the trip include a guided tour of Santa Fe, a visit to the New Mexico Veterans Memorial, guided tour of Acoma Pueblo also known as Sky City, a ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway, and visit to the Old Town of Albuquerque.
Other stops on this trip include The Bass Pro Shops “Outdoor World” in Springfield, Missouri; the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, Oklahoma; the Saint Francis Cathedral; American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum in Amarillo, Texas; the Oklahoma City National Memorial which honors those lost in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing; and Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center in Republic, Missouri.
The cost of this 11-day, 10-night trip is $1,615 per person for double occupancy, add $419 per person to the total for single occupancy. A deposit of $150 is due at signing, the final payment is due July 7, 2024.
All trips are planned with seniors in mind and feature a little more time for rest stops and attractions. When traveling, rest stops are made every two to two and a half hours. About two weeks before each trip a meeting is held to discuss what to expect on the trip, how to pack, and how much money is needed for activities or meals that are on your own.
If you would like to save money on a double occupancy room but are travelling solo, the center can help single travelers meet others traveling single too to share a room.
The purchase of trip insurance is recommended for all trips. Trips fill up quickly and often sell out, so anyone interested is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
Robb is currently working on the schedule of day trips for 2024 and they will be released at a later date. In planning so far are a zoo trip, Put-In-Bay, Canal Fulton canal boat ride, a mystery tour, Pittsburgh boat cruise, food tours, and a Christmas themed day trip.
