Last year, the Holmes County Fair board provided a perfect opportunity for those interested in presenting flowers, plants, fairy gardens and other entries that would be worthy of grabbing some blue ribbons at the annual Holmes County Fair Home Arts Show.

That went so well that they are bringing it back for round two.

On Saturday, April 26 at 9 a.m. in the Baker Building at Harvest Ridge, Vicki Puster, a member of the Ohio Garden Club Association who will be judging all of the plant and flower entries at this year’s fair, will be presenting a seminar on how to best prepare all types of entries in the plant, flower and garden categories for the arts show.

According to Peg Brand, Home Arts Show committee member, this presentation is ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to perfect all the right steps in producing the highest quality flowers and garden arrangements, and the knowledge being dispensed will come from someone who understands the intricacies of creating a special project.

“Our goal is to help equip people entering the Holmes County Fair Home Arts Show so they can best prepare their displays more in tune with what the judges are looking for,” Brand said. “Vicky is incredibly knowledgeable and knows exactly what every judge is looking for in a show presentation.”

When entering a flower or garden arrangement, and with the incredible growth experienced in the Home Arts Show over the past two years, any kind of insight and knowledge that can be gained on how to best prepare for the show is invaluable. Committee chair Kim Kellogg said the seminar not only enhances each individual’s effort but also makes for a more appealing show overall to folks who visit the lower level of the big red barn, where the flower and garden arts show is set up during fair week.

Puster will discuss topics like how long should a flower stem be and how many leaves should there be on it, what colors best accentuate a hanging basket or plant display, how many hostas should go into a display, what is the ideal way to present potted plants, how to create the best blooms and much more. There will also be plenty of time for people to ask questions.

While the arts show also features many other facets of the arts, Brand said this show will center around flowers and gardening.

She added that the show isn’t just for those who want to enter the fair show.

“It’s really for anyone who simply wants to learn more about how to make beautiful arrangements, and it is educational even if you’re not showing flowers at the fair,” Brand said.

Kellogg said the Home Arts Show continues to grow, and they hope that they will see an even greater number of entries across the board this year.

Light refreshments will be served. The show is free to attend and no registration is necessary, although the board would appreciate anyone interested in attending to visit its Facebook page and leave a message or text a message to Brand at 330-231-3829.
