The winery is situated in the heart of Tuscany, 35 minutes from Florence and 20 minutes from Siena. It is surrounded by rolling hills and a succession of unique greenery that features towering cypress trees, long stretches of vineyards, olive groves, forests of oaks and villages.

St. Joseph’s Parish in Dover will host a dinner and wine-tasting with a focus on the wines produced by a single family in Italy. The dinner has been moved to a larger location to accommodate anticipated enthusiasm among area food and wine lovers. The dinner will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Nov. 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Parish Priest Jimmy Hatfield of St. Joseph’s said the event will help raise funds for several outreach programs at the Dover Catholic church. “It helps fund the programs we have in place for our Hispanic ministry and for the many programs our youth groups participate in,” he said.

This is the second such dinner and wine-tasting hosted by the parish. “We held one 2 years ago,” Hatfield said. “It was very well received, and we needed to find more space for this year.”

Three years ago Hatfield and members of the parish went on a pilgrimage to Italy’s wine region. At the Tenuta Torciano Winery, the group had such a good experience they decided to bring it back home to Dover.

“It was a great and fun thing to do,” Hatfield said. “That’s the reason for doing this, really. We wanted to be able to share that experience with people at home. We learned that the family who operates the winery sends their family members out around the globe to host wine-tastings and to teach pairings with food. One of the sons will be coming to talk to us that night. We’ll learn about pairing wines with food and about the wines themselves. It will be done with a lot of good humor and fun.”

The Nov. 9 dinner will feature a full four-course meal prepared by Canton chef Colin Capozella. The evening will include the chance to sample nine different wine pairings and to sample many olive oils from Italy.

Nearly 120 attendees participated in the food and wine pairing at the last event. This year’s venue can accommodate 150.

“The Knights of Columbus Hall is a little larger and less cramped,” Hatfield said.

Hatfield said the winery doesn’t charge a fee to do the tasting. Wines from the family will be available for purchase at the event and shipped directly from Italy. “When we were at the winery in Italy, we were surprised and delighted to learn that it was possible to do this locally, and when they agreed to come to Dover, we were thrilled,” he said.

Apart from learning about wine and food pairings, there will be lessons on “the etiquette of the glass” and learning about the visual aspects of the wines presented.

Tickets for the event are limited at $75 per person. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the St. Joseph’s Parish office at 330-364-6661.

“When we were in Italy at the winery,” Hatfield said, “it felt very much like sitting down to dinner with family. We are glad to be able to bring that same kind of experience home to Dover and to welcome members of the same wine-making family.”

The Tenuta Torciano Winery is found in San Gimignano in the upper-western part of Italy, near Florence. It has been active for 300 years and 15 generations of the family. The winery’s website is at www.torciano.com/en.

The Knights of Columbus Hall in Dover is located at 346 W. Ninth St.
