Bert and Mary Hostetler, owners of Sweetwater Farms, were honored during the Sugarcreek Arbor Day celebration for their contributions to the community. The couple placed a plaque on one of two red maple trees that were previously planted near the Sugarcreek Sportsman Club. It was noted the village has been a member of Tree City USA for 43 years.

“We have been in business for 32 years and are reducing our business,” Mary Hostetler said. “We began with a card table in 1993. I also want to say this is a wonderful community.”

Sweetwater Farms will continue to sell vegetable plants, flowers, bulk mulch, Bull Country Compost and topsoil at 217 Buckeye St. SW in Sugarcreek.

Second grade students and their teachers Amy Stone and Hannah Nolley from Miller Avenue Elementary took part in the celebration and presented special pictures to the Hostetlers. Each student, teacher and accompanying adult received a white dogwood tree seedling to plant.

Rev. Earl Rogers of the Sugarcreek First United Church of Christ spoke to the students about the meaning of Arbor Day and offered a prayer before the festivities began. Lynn Dessecker, Sugarcreek marketing administrator, organized the event.

In related news Steel’s Farm and Village Market has opened in the former Sugarcreek Interior building at 504 Dover Road NE. The market will sell fresh produce, meat, bakery items, canned goods, honey, soaps, lotions and greenhouse items to help provide for the community as Sweetwater Farms reduces its offerings.
