As the snowflakes fall, the historic village of Zoar welcomes visitors to Christmas in Zoar. On Dec. 5 and 6, tour five uniquely decorated historic homes and visit Zoar’s Krist Kind (Christmas Angel), along with the traditional German Belsnickle Santa.
Co-chairs Sondra Ragon and Darin Good, with the Zoar Community Association, are excited about this year’s Christmas event. Among the added attractions are a Santa’s Workshop for children, a public door judging contest and many new musical performers, including soloists, guitarists, carolers, high school choirs and the Schoenbrunn Valley Barbershop Chorus performing on Saturday.
For the first time, authentic German toys and ornaments will be available for purchase, in addition to the wares of regional artisans and crafters.
On Saturday evening, there will be a candle and tree lighting ceremony to complement the holiday glow of the luminary-lined streets of the village. Children will delight at the sound of hooves from horse drawn wagons, as well as holiday wishes from the town criers.
On Sunday evening, the festival will conclude with a classical Christmas music concert, featuring The Alliance String Quartet, in the simplicity of the beautiful and historic Zoar Church.
A Christmas buffet will be available at an additional cost. Zoar’s 1845 bakery will serve holiday treats made from original Zoarite recipes.
Admission tickets will be available for purchase at several locations throughout the village.
Admission to the entire festival is $6 for adults and children under 12 are free. All proceeds are dedicated to the preservation of the historic village of Zoar.
The hours for the event are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Parking is free, and handicapped parking is available at the Zoar Church and Zoar village parking lot.
