Tree City USA of Millersburg members are well-known for planting trees all over Historic Downtown Millersburg, whether it is joining first-grade students from Millersburg Elementary for Arbor Day to plant a tree or planting them as a committee. However, on Thursday, May 20, the group united with other volunteers for a clean-up day that included cleaning, mulching and pruning trees around town.

Tree City USA of Millersburg is at it again.

The group joined a number of other volunteers recently to continue its goal of planting new trees throughout Millersburg as part of its effort to beautify Historic Downtown Millersburg.

The group was hard at work on Thursday, May 20, where members of Tree City and community volunteers worked up and down Main Street, across from Fire Ridge Golf Course, at Clay Street Park and across from Millersburg Christian Church in planting trees and beautifying the area.

While planting trees is always the most beloved and enjoyed part of what Tree City does, Tree City USA of Millersburg President Mike McDowell said seeing people take part in doing the little things to beautify the downtown area is critical to their purpose.

“The mulching, weeding and the trimming and doing groundwork aren’t necessarily the fun part of what we do, but it needs to be done, and we truly appreciate people joining us to make it happen,” McDowell said. “We continue to see different businesses, organizations and individuals stepping up to help out where they can, and that is always enjoyable to see take place. A sincere thank you to all who participated in yesterday’s work session.”

While planting trees and seeing ecological needs are met throughout HDM are first and foremost, McDowell said one unique byproduct of this type of work is seeing community members come together for a cause, not just to aid that cause, but also to develop relationships throughout the community.

“One of the side benefits of any committee or organization is that people come together and bond and develop meaningful relationships,” McDowell said. “When people participate in a committee or service-minded project, inevitably, people notice what you do. They in turn get vested in it, and before you know it, more people are taking part, and that in turn helps our community develop meaningful relationships.”

McDowell said Holmes County people seem to have a built-in desire to step in and help others at a moment’s notice, and seeing others volunteer, whether it is through their time or money, is a common practice.

McDowell said the Tree City USA of Millersburg committee members wanted to offer a sincere thanks to their donors, from Rodhe’s Market, ACE Hardware, Walmart and Tractor Supply Company of Millersburg, to company donations from Grasshopper Property Maintenance, to village employees and public volunteers.

“It looks great, and everyone’s efforts really do make a difference,” McDowell said.
