Free Positive Aging Workshop series begins May 9

As part of the Positive Aging Workshop series in May, a class on Heart Healthy Cooking will be held May 23. Participants will be introduced to heart healthy recipes through a cooking demonstration.

                        

The Falls Prevention Program of Holmes, Wayne & Ashland, under the direction of the Holmes County General Health District, the Standing Against Falls Coalition and Danbury Senior Living in Millersburg, is sponsoring a Positive Aging Workshop series every Thursday in May beginning May 9 to celebrate Older Americans Month. Those age 60 and over are encouraged to attend. Caregivers, adult children and anyone interested in learning what healthy, positive aging looks like also are encouraged to participate.

In each workshop session, attendees will be provided with further life tools to continue to guide individuals into healthy and safe aging. The workshops are free.

The workshops will be held in the community room at Danbury Senior Living, 4245 Glen Drive, Millersburg, from 1-3 p.m. Each workshop consists of two 1-hour sessions. Each session has relevant topics pertaining to positive aging and healthy living. Speakers represent agencies from Holmes County and the region. Individuals are asked to preregister for workshops they plan on attending by calling Kerry MacQueen at the health district at 330-674-5035 ext. 251.

May 9

—Session one, 1-2 p.m., Keeping Holmes County Safe:Participants will be introduced to the new emergency management program that is being used within Holmes County and the importance of emergency planning within households. Speakers include Jason Troyer, director of Holmes County Emergency Agency, and Jordan Tschiegg, EMA specialist.

—Session two, 2-3 p.m., Healthy Aging in Holmes County: Participants will learn the details of the recently awarded Healthy Aging Grant, which will provide more services and programs for the age 60 and over population in Holmes County. Speakers include Rebecca Starner, LSW, MSW, director of personal health services at Holmes County General Health District.

May 16

—Session one, 1-2 p.m., Fall risk screenings and lower body strength: Participants will learn the importance of fall risk screenings and lower body strength. Speakers include Tyler Hawkins, physical therapist, Pomerene Rehabilitation.

—Session two, 2-3 p.m., Move It, Shake It, Lift It: Participants will be introduced to various forms of exercise that can help promote healthy aging. Speakers include Cheryl Seabright, certified fitness instructor, Cheryl’s L.I.F.E. Fitness Studio.

May 23

—Session one, 1-2 p.m., Health Risk: Prevention of high blood pressure and stroke:Participants will learn how to prevent and control high blood pressure and stroke in the age 60 and over population. Speakers include Dr. Janet Dailey, Pomerene Hospital, and Renee Conkle, RN-BC, Cardiac Stress Lab/Rehab PCS.

—Session two, 2-3 p.m., Heart Healthy Cooking: Participants will be introduced to heart healthy recipes through a cooking demonstration. Speakers include Kate Shumaker, MS, RD, LD, extension educator of family and consumer sciences at the OSU Extension Holmes County.

May 30

—Session one, 1-2 p.m., Vitality Through Volunteering: Participants will learn of the volunteer possibilities through the RSVP and Cooperation for Ohio Appalachian Development programs. Speakers include Laura Leprotti, RSVP coordinator, Cooperation for Ohio Appalachian Development.

—Session two, 2-3 p.m., Lending a Helping Hand:Participants will be introduced to four volunteer opportunities that are available within Holmes County. Speakers include Holmes County assistant dog warden Mike DeWitt, Friends of the Library members Carole Norman and Paula Cicconetti, Pomerene Hospital volunteer Cindy Yoder, and fall prevention ambassador Kerry MacQueen, Holmes County General Health District.

Each session will have a Q-and-A period. Brochures and resources will be available at each workshop session pertaining to the specific topics presented.
