The Dover Public Library will host Carl Quatraro, a native of the Akron area, as he explains America’s Electoral College during a virtual program on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. This timely program will explain the story behind the Electoral College and why the nation’s founding fathers decided to implement it. Quatraro will discuss why the system was created and how it works.

The members of the U.S. Electoral College, known as electors, have an important job because they formally cast the votes that decide who will be the next president and vice president of the nation.

Even though the founding forefathers of the U.S. established this system as an integral part of the Constitution (1787), the phrase “electoral college” was never actually used in the Constitution.

In 1804 Congress approved the 12th Amendment, which made some changes to the electoral process. In spite of the fact that over the years there have been over 700 proposals to either reform or eliminate the Electoral College, this system has been used in every presidential election since 1804.

“This is a great opportunity to understand an important concept of our election process,” said Sherrel Rieger, adult programming specialist. “We encourage members of the community to join this program because the topic is especially pertinent since the presidential election of 2020 is only weeks away.”

Quatraro, who lives in Fairlawn, has spent his entire life in the Akron area. He graduated from Walsh Jesuit High School and the University of Akron. After retiring from Liberty Mutual Insurance, he began delivering entertaining and informative presentations to local libraries, senior and professional associations, and retirement centers. He credits this new chapter in his retirement to the speaking skills he learned in his 15-year membership with Toastmasters International.

The program will begin via Zoom. Registration is available through the Dover Public Library’s website at www.doverlibrary.org/register. One also can email Rieger at srieger@doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.
