Hazardous waste collection program dates announced
During the May 3 Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District Board of Directors meeting, the household hazardous waste collection program dates were announced.
The Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds collection will be held May 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. by appointment only. A collection will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on May 20 from noon to 4 p.m. by appointment. There are 200 appointments available at each site. Richard Regular, Stark County commissioner and board chairman, conducted the meeting, which dealt with three landfills located in the three-county district: American Landfill, Countywide Landfill and Kimble Landfill.
The board recognized Wayne County commissioner Sue Smail, who is stepping down from her elected position. The board thanked her for the service she provided while serving on the board of directors.
In other business
The board heard the annual district report must be submitted to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency by June 1. It includes recycling data for residential, commercial and industrial in the three counties; progress made toward the initiatives the plan had identified; and highlights and challenges the district faced in 2023 and the current year.
The board learned the next planning period for the 10-year solid waste plan update will begin Sept. 20 at 9:30 a.m. during the policy committee meeting. The plan is updated every three years.
The board heard the tipping fee revenue is up 1.09% in 2024 from 2023, reported through February 2024.
The board approved the yard waste host site block grants Brewster, Canton Township and Nimishillen Township have implemented for residents only and the card reader system. Dennison, Dover, Lawrence Township in Tuscarawas County and Perry Township in Stark County also have sites but no card reader system.
The board heard the district was awarded a $100,000 recycling grant through the 2024 Ohio EPA community and litter grant.
Other information
The American Landfill Community Advisory Committee will meet May 17 at 9 a.m. at the landfill. The committee will review the OEPA required semiannual groundwater monitoring well test results and voluntary residential water well test results and ensure leachate is being contained, collected and/or hauled away without negatively impacting the local groundwater.
The next board of directors meeting will be held July 12 at 9:30 a.m. in the district office at 9918 Wilkshire Blvd. in Bolivar.
