Al Osler, retiring substitute bus driver, was given the Tiger Way Award during the June 17 Strasburg Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Vince Lindsey said Osler was always ready to drive the bus as a substitute or on athletic trips. Sharon Smith, transportation supervisor, said Osler is the best, is very professional and so involved in the community. Osler, who is known as “our” bus driver to the students also served as Strasburg superintendent and high school/middle school principal for many years.

The board also

-Accepted the resignation of Madison Swartzentruber, teacher, at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

-Accepted the resignation of Troy McClellan, varsity boys golf coach, effective July 3.

-Employed Jim Markino as the Little Tiger Pres-school head teacher.

-Issued one-year certified employment contracts for the 2024-25 school year to the following; Tyler Bates, middle school math; Emily Crossley, high school science; Kinzey Schilling, elementary intervention specialist; Hannah Geyer, elementary grades 4-5 math and science teacher; Shannon Moore, middle school/high school intervention specialist.

-Approved a one-year certified contract for Carly Mayle, kindergarten teacher. She was voted separately by the board as her mother Marsha Clark, is a board member.

-Approved Boston McKinney, long term substitute, effective for 2024-25 school year.

- Gave approval to Kylie Martinelli, third-grade reading guarantee summer tutoring, effective June 4-5 for three- hours per day at $24.50 per hour.

-Approved Local Professional Development Committee personal service contract for Frank Kruger, high school/middle school principal, for the 2024-25 school year.

-Approved fiscal year 2025 temporary appropriations of $4.7 million.

-Gave approval for a Federal/State Program Personal Service contract to Sheila Doerschuk, elementary principal, for the 2024-25 school year.

Approved membership in the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy for the school year at an annual cost of $1,040.

-Agreed to purchase Amplify curriculum, English Language Arts, for kindergarten to eighth grade, at a cost not to exceed $138,364. The state issued $26,000 toward the purchase.

Other information

Recognized the 2024 State Champion softball team. The Lady Tigers have been state champions ten times and been to the state tournament 19 times.

Gave recognition to the Tigers of the month – Austin Pulley, high school, Lydia Thomas, middle school, Zelda Coffman, elementary.

Lauded Makayla McVay high school and Brody Baughman, Ray Kroc Award winners.

An elementary early start session will be held for students Aug. 5-8. Tonya Ronald, teacher, will lead the students.

The next board meeting will be held Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at 140 N. Bodmer Ave. The July 17 board meeting is canceled.
