Council members heard at the Feb. 20 meeting of Port Washington Council that a collapsed building on Dichler Drive had fallen over and was blocking an alley. The building, which had been leaning for some time due to a collapsed roof, was taken down by a recent heavy snowfall.

The alley between North St. Clairsville Street and Tufford Lane will remain closed until cleanup is complete.

Council member Terry Bates told council during the meeting he had contacted a company to perform cleanup before next week. However, a follow-up call was made to Mayor Tom Gardner, who said the owner will take care of cleanup at no cost to the village and that he hopes the cleanup will be complete by the first of March.

In other matters

Gardner reported a boat and junk vehicles have been removed from Main Street after making contact with the owners. Gardner said during the winter recreational vehicles are supposed to be stored in the back of the owner’s property away from the street.

Fiscal officer Darissa Lute requested approval to purchase a time clock for the police department members who are paid hourly. She said a time clock would eliminate the delay caused by waiting for officers to fill out and turn in handwritten monthly time sheets.

Council member Nate Penrod reminded council he had requested a time clock for this purpose six months ago but said the idea was shot down. Gardner said the matter has been brought to the floor again for approval. Council approved the purchase.

It was announced two 40-yard dumpsters were rented at a cost of $4,497 for the village-wide spring cleanup April 26-28.

Council approved allowing the Zoar Community Association to set up a small tent and provide information about Zoar Village and Ft. Laurens during a poker run on June 15.

Council President Joe Bourne said he will obtain a quote from Newton Asphalt for an upcoming paving project to potentially include East Luther Drive, Sullivan’s Lane and East Canal Street.

Council member Brandie Bourne reported on several items. She said Tri-County EMS had donated a bag of first aid supplies for use by the police department. She also said a fire department spaghetti dinner will be held March 17 from noon to 3 p.m. There will be no breakfasts during March.

Additionally, Brandie Bourne advised council of a discount sale on banners for the village streetlight poles, should the village wish to take advantage of lower prices. She also reported having placed orders for batteries for the police department’s AED.

Port Washington Council meets the first and third Tuesday each month at 7 p.m. at Village Hall. All meetings are open to the public.
