The Volkswagens in the Village car show will take place June 4 at the Amish Door Restaurant. The event is free to attend for both car registrants and spectators.

Katy Gill, marketing coordinator at the Amish Door Village, said the show is part of their way of kicking off summer.

“It’s kind of a fun setting because we line up the cars on the outer edge of our parking lot, which gives people a scenic view of the Amish country farms,” Gill said. “So it’s a little different than just seeing a bunch of cars lined up in the grass or in an empty lot somewhere.”

The first 100 registrants will receive commemorative dash plaques. Trophies will be awarded to the top-three Beetles and the top-three VW buses, as well as one Best of Show.

Gill said there will be no official judging panel. Instead, all winners will be determined by votes from the public.

“It doesn’t matter what model or how old or new it is. We want the public to bring out their Volkswagens,” she said. “We’ll have ballots for people to vote for their favorites as they walk around and view the cars.”

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with the show open to the public at 11 a.m. and awards given at 3 p.m.

Outdoor marketplace the same day

The first outdoor Amish Door Marketplace of the summer also will take place June 4, featuring handcrafted items from about 20 local vendors, according to Gill. Visitors can stroll through the Amish countryside and visit vendors showcasing everything from home decor to jewelry. The marketplace will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Caribbean cookout from 6-9 p.m.

Gill said for those who prefer an evening event or those who want to make a full day of it, the Inn at the Amish Door will lay out a Caribbean-style spread on the Sunset Patios. The all-you-can-eat buffet will feature jerk-style chicken and pork, coconut shrimp, rice, salad, grilled veggies, and spiced rum cake.

The Dover High School steel drum band will perform from 6:15-7 p.m. with veteran singer and guitarist Ian Lane providing island music, classic rock and oldies until 9 p.m.

A cash bar with beer, wine and frozen cocktails will round out the menu. Tickets for the buffet, which are $29.99 for adults and $14.99 for kids age 13 and under, can be purchased at www.amishdoor.com/events until June 3.

“It’s a lot packed into one day,” Gill said. “But we think the car show, shopping and buffet will be a nice way for people to enjoy the first full weekend of summer.”

Seating for the buffet will begin at 6 p.m. with food served at 7 p.m. The Amish Door is located at 1210 Winesburg St. in Wilmot. Call 330-359-5464 or visit The Amish Door on Facebook.
