Thanks to Safe Streets and Roads for All, a program born out of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Wayne County will receive more than a quarter of a million dollars to implement a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan.

“Wayne County applied for and was awarded $256,000 to establish a county-wide Comprehensive Safety Action Plan,” Wayne County engineer Scott Miller said. “The grant will pay for $204,800, which is 80% of the total project cost, with the remainder paid by local entities. The plan will include all cities, villages and townships within Wayne County.”

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Wayne County will commit to an eventual goal of zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The commitment must include a goal and timeline for eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries achieved through one or both of the following: the target date for achieving zero roadway fatalities and serious injuries or an ambitious percentage reduction of roadway fatalities and serious injuries by a specific date with an eventual goal of eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries.

The plan will address the county’s most pressing issues and include the following:

—A safety analysis of existing conditions and historical trends to determine a baseline level of crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries.

—Robust public engagement with relevant stakeholders and community groups that allows for community feedback.

—Equity considerations for plan development using inclusive and representative processes.

—An assessment of current policies, plans, guidelines, and standards to identify opportunities for improvement to prioritize safety.

—The identification of a comprehensive set of projects and strategies.

—Progress and transparency reports that measure the effectiveness of the action plan.
