The Knights came back to stun the Ohio Cardinal Conference on Thursday, Sept. 24, with an impressive round of 313 to edge Ashland by a stroke to win the OCC championship. “I always wondered what we could do if all four guys came out and shot a good round at one time, and, boom! It happened today,” said West Holmes coach Kim Kauffman. “I think we shocked everyone there. We’ve had rounds where one or two guys scored well, but not all four.” The Knights were led by senior Joseph Bukosky and sophomore Bryce Spitler, who both shot 76s to tie for the top spot in the OCC, forcing a playoff with two other players from Lexington and Ashland. “They got knocked out in the playoff, but they both shot super rounds,” Kauffman said. “They still tied for the top spot in the league.” Joining the top two were Errick Flinner with a 79 and Patrick Shriver with an 82. For their efforts in the OCC match on Thursday and their combined records throughout the season, Bukosky was named first team OCC and Joey Gonzalez was named second team. Flinner, Shriver and Spitler each garnered honorable mention. “We came out and played a practice round on Wednesday and really lit up the course,” Kauffman said. “I hoped it would carry over, but when we got there Thursday morning, we couldn’t even see the greens because of the fog. But they played through it and did a great job.” West Holmes’ 313 won. Ashland finished second with a 314 and Lexington finished third at 316. The coach hoped the Knights could continue their solid play as they headed to River Greens to play in the Division II Sectional on Wednesday. Monday’s action was postponed due to inclement weather. Joey Gonzalez and Joseph Bukosky both shot decent rounds for the Knights, but Lexington downed the Knights by 10 strokes 157-167 Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Fire Ridge. Gonzalez shot a 39 and Bukosky added a 41. Errick Flinner added a 43 and Patrick Shriver shot a 44 to round out the card for the Knights. Ryan Hassman won medalist honors with a 37.
