The West Fork Year in Review

It’s been a trip! As Judy Price stated at our New Year’s Eve luncheon… “like riding a roller coaster…lots of ups and downs and scary curves.” But at last, the thrill ride is over. We’ve ended 2009 on a positive note. Our finances are manageable and our clientele is growing. We were closed for several days last January because of the weather. But, we made sure all home delivered meal clients had enough to last. Although several events had to be cancelled, bingo, Bible study, euchre, Red Hats, Hospice, and grief programs were held. In addition to our regular programs, Tax Preparation for Seniors took place last February. The historical society met, and yoga classes were held. Building rentals picked up in March, one being the well-attended Vo-Ag Breakfast. There was a well-attended surprise 90th birthday party for Byrl Wurthmann in April. Spanish classes were offered and a Volunteer Recognition Tea was held. PERS also met. In May we hosted a stroke prevention program, retired teachers’ meetings, and our first Senior Employment Services meeting. The Tuesday morning Farmers Market began. And, another successful Senior Day was well attended. The summer months were full of graduation parties, wedding receptions, an in-house book and yard sale, volunteer recognitions and a Bible study program hosted by various ministers. A Fourth of July celebration included homemade ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers, and popcorn along with live music, and, of course, a perfect place to enjoy fireworks. By the end of summer, our health inspections went well and we interviewed and hired a receptionist, a cleaner, and a kitchen worker from the Senior Employment Services. We also were set up as a drop point for the Angel Food Ministries. Working with the sheriff’s department, we were able to secure additional workers for quite a successful program. The Harvest Fest Dance in October was a great time that included a DJ, bluegrass music, and a hula hoop contest. Craft workshops, a Medway program, a health fair, a health awareness program on smoking and weight loss, and the first of our monthly First Friday Fish Fries also took place. A Chinese Auction in November was much fun and well-attended. Angels Care Home Health, AARP, retired teachers, and Senior Employment Services all held meetings. Our Thanksgiving dinner was a delicious success. Automatic doors were installed in December. We celebrated Breakfast with Santa sponsored by Pomerene Hospital and Smith Ambulance, enjoyed student musical entertainment, and celebrated the holidays with our normal activities and clubs. The board of trustees is working diligently to make sure our programs expand and our community services continue to grow. Our “Burn the Mortgage” project is well underway. And, our annual appeal garnered many new friends. We invite you to join us in 2010 to guarantee another successful year. Thanks for your most appreciated support.
