For the second time in recent months, a member of the Wooster City School District’s teaching team has received statewide recognition for excellence in education. Kean Elementary School second grade teacher, Julie Beckett, was named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for September. The Ohio Lottery’s Teacher of the Month award recognizes outstanding teachers for their dedication, professionalism and work on behalf of the state’s young people. Beckett was nominated by Peg Butler, Kean Elementary principal. “Mrs. Beckett is a committed teacher,” Butler said. “Her concern for the students and willingness to share and collaborate with her peers contributes to the success of our academic programs.” “Julie serves as a fine role model for others. She desires to continue to learn more and change what is needed,” said Butler. “It is such a pleasure to work with her.” This is Beckett’s 21st year in the teaching profession, 15 of which she has spent at Kean Elementary where she leads the Veterans Day program and helps lead the Earth Day activities for the school. She also recently volunteered to pilot one of the four reading programs for the district. A dedicated teacher, Beckett ensures that her students continue to learn over the summer months by developing learning packets to send home at the end of the school year. “It is an honor to have been nominated to be the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the month by my principal, Peg Butler,” Beckett said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with such dedicated staff, hard-working students and the supportive parents of Kean Elementary School.” Beckett also thanked the Ohio Lottery Commission “for their continued support of education.” “We are proud of our entire faculty at Wooster City Schools,” said Michael Tefs, Wooster City School District superintendent. “We strive to provide a world-class education for our students and we couldn’t do it without outstanding teachers like Mrs. Beckett.” Beckett is the second educator from the Wooster City School District to be honored by the Ohio Lottery as Teacher of the Month. Last November, Parkview Elementary School fifth and sixth grade intervention specialist Judy Montelione received the honor. During the 2008-09 academic year, two students from the Wooster City School District were also honored by the Ohio Lottery. In February of 2009, then Edgewood Middle School eighth-grade student Heather Koontz was named as the Academic All Star from the Akron region. Then Edgewood Middle School seventh-grade student Kyle Noel received the same honor in April.
