Tusky Valley district exceeds state standards

Tuscarawas Valley Superintendent Dr. Derek Varansky gave data on the 2023-24 report card for the district during Monday’s meeting. The district received four stars overall, which exceeds the state standards. The district received four starts in achievement, graduation component, and gap closing and three stars in progress and early literacy.

“We received three stars and above in all categories. We are thrilled with the accomplishments,” Varansky said.

President of the Ohio School Boards Association and board member Sally Green gave updates on the OSBA and several proposed changes they are considering including the report card.

-Granted one-year supplemental contracts to Matt Ward, head girls basketball; Danielle Wallick, and Zach Kopp, assistant girls basketball; Shawn Dillon, assistant girls basketball volunteer, with supplemental donations to Dillon from Matt Ward, Danielle Wallick and Zach Kopp.

-Accepted donations/grants, with thanks, $15,000 Ann Marie Ackerman TTEE; $8,000 Reeves Foundation, Project Lead the Way; $2,000 anonymous and $2,000 Buckeye Firearms Foundation, both Trojan Crush; $1,000 Bolivar Lions Club, choir and speech; $500 Ohio Middle Level Association, computer science lab; $500 Colorwrap Inc. and $350 Jeffrey and Jennifer Miller, Hope Squad T-shirts; $100 Schweitzer Engineering Lab Inc., miscellaneous.

-Granted one-year supplemental contracts to certified employees Matt Claxon, middle school girls basketball, Gabrielle Schwartz, National Honor Society.

-Issued one-year supplemental contracts to contracted employees Jennifer Daum, co-assistant speech, Shawn Dillon, Emily Roh, drama, Jesse Willis, assistant high school cross country, all volunteers, Kevin Krysty, eighth-grade girls basketball, Jason Johnson, head wrestling.

-Approved the eighth-grade Washington D.C. trip, June 2-4, 2025.

-Approved a lease agreement with Cognitive Organics LLC for rental of room, 128 in the administrative building, effective Nov. 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025.

-Granted a one-year supplemental contract to Katie Burrier, middle school girls basketball volunteer. Burrier is the daughter of Amy Burrier, board member, and must be voted on separately.

-Approved 28 individuals for the 21st Century Community Learning Center positions for after school programing, paid by the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. There are 80 to 100 students who attend the after school programs.

Recognized students of the month - Ava Stamets, student; Danika Dolak, fine artist; Addelina Carroll, athlete; Anna Courser, seventh-grade; Lilyanna Winkhart, eighth-grade; Alianna Freitag, freshman; Ngan Le khanh (Ty) Nguyen, sophomore; Sydney Miller, junior.

The district will host Boo at the School Oct. 28 from 5-7 p.m. All kindergarten to sixth-grade students and their families are invited to attend.

October is National Principals Month and Varansky thanked all principals for the jobs they do for students.

A Veteran’s Day event will be held Friday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. in the high school gym. All veterans are invited to attend.

A grandparent’s day will be held Oct. 31 at 9 a.m. for the elementary students. There will be an academic activity, photos with students and refreshments. The fall party begins for students at 1:30 p.m.

The next board meeting will be held Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the community board room at 2632 Tusky Valley Road in Zoarville. Those attending should enter the west door of the former high school. The meeting was changed from Nov. 11 due to the Ohio School Board Capital Conference in Columbus.
