Dover Library launches Summer Reading Program
The Dover Public Library is gearing up for the summer reading season with the theme “Invent Your Own Fun at the Library.”
The children’s department will kick off the program with a Mad Science show Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m. Kids can pick up their summer reading trackers that day and enter to win tickets to Kings Island and the Akron RubberDucks by signing up at the event.
Each week throughout the summer, the children’s department will feature a different theme with corresponding programs.
The first week, Science Week, will include a storytime with local author Farrah Raines Wednesday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. Week two is Fashion Week and will feature a Lego fashion-building session Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m., where kids can make glasses, bracelets and rings to take home.
Cooking Week will take place during week three with a no-bake cooking class Friday, June 20 at 11 a.m. Week four is Movie Week and will feature a Dogman-themed party Saturday, June 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with activities including superhero cape decorating and a library obstacle course. The Park Day event, featuring games and Popsicles, will be held Wednesday, June 25 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
In July the program will continue with Art Week, which will include Artsy Afternoon Tuesday, July 1 at 1 p.m. During Technology Week, children can build their own robots Saturday, July 12 at 11 a.m. The Akron Zoo will visit for Animal Week Saturday, July 19 at 1 p.m., bringing furry friends for a live program. For Music Week kids will create their own musical instruments Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m.
The summer will wrap up with Heroes Week. On Wednesday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m., Dover Fire and Police will visit the library, allowing children to explore emergency vehicles and meet first responders.
Weekly storytimes will be held every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. without the need for registration. Storytimes will feature activities such as bubbles, parades, time machines and progressive storytelling.
Children who complete their summer reading tracker will receive a free book, a pizza coupon from Gionino’s, a customizable bookmark, and coupons for Ohio State Parks and the Ohio State Fair. They also will be entered into a drawing for over 25 prizes including grand prizes such as a Leapfrog telescope, a digital microscope with a fossil activity kit or a Nex Playground with a carrying case.
“We couldn’t do everything we do if it wasn’t for our sponsors,” said Jen Gardner, children’s department manager.
This year’s sponsors include Alban Title, Buehler’s, Directions Credit Union, Dover Exchange Club, Elite Tire, Fell Realty, Friends of the Dover Public Library, Gionino’s, Grinders, McDonald’s, Miller’s Creamery, Subway, Tara Jenkins and Wendy’s.
To celebrate the program’s end, children who complete their summer reading by Aug. 1 will be invited, along with their families, to a pool party at the Dover Pool Friday, Aug. 1 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. They also will be eligible for the prize drawing Aug. 2.
