Fairless Veterans Day program includes Canton Navy recruiter
Culinary Specialist Submarine Second Class Petty Officer Brock Vassel will be the featured speaker at the Fairless Local School District’s Veterans Day program to be held Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the Lucinda Frailly Performing Arts Center located at 800 7th St. SE, Brewster.
Vassel is the Navy Recruiting Station Canton Navy Recruiter and has served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He is originally from Mansfield and has been deployed overseas seven times in five years. He served onboard an Ohio Class Submarine named the USS Wyoming 742.
He explained there are not many Navy recruiting bases in Ohio so his detailers told him if he wanted to come home, near Mansfield, it would be for recruiting. He has been in Canton since May 2024, and has thoroughly enjoyed spreading Navy awareness and speaking about the future of not only themilitary, but the country as well.
“While on sea duty I met my wife, Morgan, and we have two children, a daughter Brayden and a son Sawyer. The benefits I have gotten from the Navy are taking care of my children and providing free medical benefits,” Vassel said.
Vassel said he wanted to stay in the Navy to best provide for his family, which is the sole reason he decided to re-enlist, but he also wanted to come home as their children had never met their family in the area. They reside in Summit County.
The Fairless High School band and choir will provide entertainment. The Beach City Weimer-Widder Post #549 of the American Legion will present the colors. The event is open to all veterans. Refreshments will be served.
