If you own a pond, then you know they require maintenance to keep them operating properly and to maintain the desired appearance. If you are curious about installing a pond, you should be asking questions.

The Wayne Soil and Water Conservation District will hold a free pond clinic on March 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Buckeye Agricultural Museum and Education Center, located across from the Wayne County Fairgrounds, 877 W. Old Lincoln Way, Wooster.

This winter was exceptionally cold, and many ponds froze over. Low oxygen in the winter can cause a fish kill if the pond was frozen and snow covered. Removing 25-50% of the snow on your frozen pond can provide sunlight to plants and provide the needed oxygen to your fish.

Learn more at this educational event about pond management, pond design, fish stocking, water-quality issues, vegetation growth and more. Plan on bringing some questions.

The program will be an informal Q-and-A session held indoors with guest speaker Steve Fender of Fender’s Fish Hatchery. Fender has published the book “Farm Pond Management: A Common-Sense Guide,” which will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be provided.

There also will be information available to order fish to stock your ponds, and attendees are welcome to order fish at the event. Payment should be by check as credit/debit cards cannot be processed.

RSVP to Wayne SWCD at 330-263-5376 or find out more online at www.wayneswcd.org, on Facebook or on X.
